Identifying the type of medical transport is an important step that always needs to be the safest for the patient, based on the patient’s current medical needs, mobility status, and environment.

MEDICAL NEEDS are based on the patient’s condition, vital signs, level of consciousness, illness acuity, and factors that need to be accounted to prevent worsening.

THE PATIENT’S CONDITION: It is based on the Circulation, Airway, Breathing, and state of consciousness status of the patient.

The Patient condition types are defined are as follows:

  • Undetermined: The patient is awaiting physician and/or assessment.
  • Good: The Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. The patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
  • Fair: The Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. The patient may be uncomfortable but is conscious. Indicators are favorable.
  • Serious: The Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. The patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
  • Critical: The Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. The patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.

POST-TREATMENT STATUS:

  • Treated and released: The patient received treatment but was not admitted to a facility.
  • Treated and discharged: The patient was treated, admitted, and discharged home or to a facility.
  • Treated and transferred: The patient received treatment at one facility and was then transferred to another facility.
